And with all due respect, not every child can exist without medication. Mine couldn't and can't.  I waited several years, observing and working with my oldest.  The pediatrician was very cautious and only put kids on medication after a complete psychological work-up and when all other avenues failed. We started out on Cylert, but switched when there were some live problems discovered with that medicine and the dr. did not want to risk it.  Since then, one child has switched to dexedrine and the other to concerta. My children have ADD without hyperactivity.  Both are A students who have excelled academically but could not have done so without the assistance of medication. We do a great disservice if we tell people that there is ONE and ONLY ONE answer that is right for everyone.  Each family has to do the research, weigh the options and make a reasoned decision.
